What does protection by enclosure “tb” do?
GB/T 3836.31-2021 covers equipment protected against dust ignition by enclosure t. The enclosure helps prevent hazardous quantities of dust from entering and reaching ignition-capable parts. The thermal design limits the temperature of external surfaces under assessed conditions.
The current marking is written tb, not td. The letter t identifies protection by enclosure, while the b suffix corresponds to Equipment Protection Level Db. Older documents may contain tD or td notation, but MAXON's confirmed certificate marking for these products is Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db.
This protection depends on the complete assembly. Opening the enclosure, changing a gland, substituting a seal, adding an antenna feed-through or modifying the internal heat load can affect the assessed design. Maintenance is therefore part of continued safety, not merely a reliability task.
For an industrial wireless access point or bridge, the design review should include:
· the enclosure and cover joint;
· all cable entries and blanking elements;
· external connectors and antenna arrangements;
· power conversion and internal heat sources;

What does dust group IIIC mean?
Group III applies to equipment for explosive dust atmospheres. IEC terminology separates dust into IIIA, IIIB and IIIC subgroups; IIIC concerns conductive dust.
The label should not be treated as a substitute for sampling and classifying the actual dust. Grain dust, coal dust and conductive metal dust do not present identical behaviour. Particle size, moisture, deposits, housekeeping and process conditions can change the hazard.
Steel and metal-processing projects deserve particular care because conductive dust can create both ignition and electrical reliability problems. A buyer should provide the dust classification and the safety basis used by the plant rather than asking the wireless supplier to infer them from an industry name.
Why is the surface temperature written as T80°C?
Dust markings commonly state a maximum surface temperature directly. That value must be evaluated against the minimum ignition temperature of the dust cloud and, where relevant, the ignition behaviour of dust layers. The project safety engineer applies the governing standard, margins and site conditions.
T80°C is not the ambient-temperature rating. It is also not a promise that every point on the enclosure normally operates at 80°C. The approved ambient range and the surface-temperature marking are different pieces of information.
Dust deposits can act as thermal insulation. If accumulated material prevents heat from escaping, surface and internal temperatures may change. Installation instructions, layer assumptions, inspection frequency and housekeeping practices therefore matter.
What does Equipment Protection Level Db mean?
Db is a dust Equipment Protection Level providing a high level of protection. It is used for Zone 21 and Zone 22 applications, subject to the site's classification, GB/T 3836 certificate and installation requirements. It addresses ignition risk during normal operation and expected faults within the certified protection concept.
It does not mean the product is automatically suitable for every Zone 21 location. The engineer must still verify dust subgroup, surface temperature, ambient range, ingress protection, mechanical exposure, chemical attack and all certificate conditions.
Where might combustible-dust wireless be used?
Relevant projects may include grain handling, food processing, coal preparation, bulk materials, steelmaking, aluminium or other metal processing, and selected mining areas. The exact classification cannot be assigned from the industry alone.
Typical wireless functions include:
· plant WiFi coverage for approved mobile terminals;
· point-to-point links between buildings, conveyors or yards;
· telemetry from PLCs, meters and condition-monitoring gateways;
· cellular backhaul at remote assets;
· maintenance access where cabling is impractical.

Why does IP68 not answer the dust-explosion question?
IP68 describes resistance to dust ingress and water entry under the conditions represented by the IP code. It does not address whether a hot surface, arc or internal fault can ignite an explosive dust atmosphere.
An Ex enclosure may also carry an IP rating because ingress control is relevant to protection and environmental durability. The two markings answer different questions:
· IP: can dust or water enter under defined test conditions?
· Ex: how is ignition risk controlled in the stated explosive atmosphere?
Both must correspond to the exact delivered product.
What should a combustible-dust wireless RFQ include?
Provide the following before requesting a model recommendation:
1. installation country and required approval scheme;
2. zone and required EPL;
3. dust subgroup and the site's dust test data;
4. permitted maximum surface temperature;
5. minimum and maximum ambient temperature;
6. expected dust layers, cleaning method and inspection interval;
7. corrosion, washdown, vibration and impact exposure;
8. WiFi, bridge, cellular-router or DTU function;
9. antenna, cable-entry, power and grounding requirements;
10. current certificate and nameplate requirements for document review.
This separates the safety decision from the marketing description “dustproof WiFi.”
FAQ
Is IIIC only relevant to metal dust?
IIIC is the conductive-dust subgroup. The site's dust analysis should determine the correct subgroup; a supplier should not classify it from a brief process description.
Is Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db a Zone 21 marking?
EPL Db is commonly associated with Zone 21, but local regulations, the hazardous-area dossier and the certificate determine acceptance. Treat the mapping as a design input, not blanket installation permission.
Does a stainless-steel enclosure make equipment explosion-protected?
No. Material selection can help with corrosion and mechanical service, but protection depends on the assessed enclosure, entries, seals, temperatures and complete equipment configuration.
Can the same product carry gas and dust markings?
It may, if the complete product is assessed and marked for both. Verify both lines on the current certificate and nameplate. Do not copy a gas marking into a dust specification or vice versa.
Do all MAXON explosion-proof models carry the same dust marking?
